Governor Diri’s National Scrabble Championship Gets Underway In Yenagoa

Bayelsa State Scrabble Association says preparations have been concluded to host a befitting National Scrabble Championship from May 28 to 30 in Yenagoa.
The two-day competition is scheduled to hold at the Harold Dappa Biriye conference centre, Onopa, Yenagoa.
Officials of the Association gave the hint when they appeared on Radio Nigeria Creek FM Sports to discuss the inaugural Governor Douye Diri National Scrabble Championship.
Chairman of the Association Mr, Daniel Alabrah said the showpiece was open to all secondary schools in the state, stating that over sixty schools have indicated interest to take part in the championship.
He noted that the inclusion of secondary schools in the competition was to make scrabble popular in schools in Bayelsa, asserting that scrabble would enhance the intellectual capacities of the students.
According to Mr. Alabrah, top officials of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation NSF including the chairman , caretaker Committee of the Nigeria Scrabble Federation, Mr.Garba Gora as well as Nigeria Champion Wellington Jighere are among the dignitaries to grace the event.
Alabrah,who is also the Chief Press Secretary to the Bayelsa Governor while thanking the Governor his continuous support in the sector frowned at the non challant attitude of multi national oil companies and financial institutions towards the development of sports, assuring that the championship would be a yearly competition.
Another guest, Vice chairman of the Association Mr. Timi Woko noted that the association had begun a catch them young campaign in the state with a view of encouraging young Bayelsans to embrace scrabble as an academic game and to groom them to compete with their peers within and outside country.
Mr,Woko pointed out that the performance of the state scrabble team at the National Sports Festival in Edo State was indicative that Bayelsa was a force to reckon with in Nigeria scrabble, adding that preparations for Delta 2022 has commenced with the hosting of the first Governor Diri scrabble Championship.
He commended Governor Diri for supporting the youths to embrace sports as well as the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr Daniel Igali, and the Director of Sports in the state's sports council, Sir Braveman Wodi, for their support for the championship.
